How Much Should I Weigh?

How much should I weigh for my age? How much should I weigh for my length? I know these are questions people frequently ask. If the answer is that simple and straight forward, then most of us won’t continue to ask it.

If you missed my previous blog, which was written on a lighter note, then have a look at it here – How much should I weigh – what’s your relationship with your scale.

You would have heard of BMI, but what is it?

As I have just mentioned, how much should I weigh, is not as straight forward as we think. So many times people tell us to look at our BMI. That’s short for body mass index.  It is calculated with the following formula –  weight in kilo’s divided by your height in meters multiplied by height in meters.  Your BMI gives you an idea of where you are on the obesity scale.

Have a look at the table below.  You don’t have to calculate your BMI to use the table.  How do you use this table?  Measure your height.  Actually it will be easier for someone else to measure you :-).  Find your height on the table and draw a line horizontally.  Weigh yourself.  Find your weight on the table and draw a line vertically.  Now see where the two lines cross.  What colour are you?  If you can’t see colour, then how does the table describe you?

Interpreting the table……Now this might be interesting.

You are not going to get a straight forward answer if you were looking for one.  No black and white.  No right or wrong.  Just interpretation.  So stick with me.

Ok.  The table says you are a healthy weight and you look and feel healthy, so that’s ok.  No problem with that.  Continue with your healthy lifestyle and refine it if you want.

The table says you are a healthy weight.  You are surprised because you accept you are over weight.  You don’t look or feel that healthy because your clothes don’t fit properly.  You might have medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.  But the table says you are a healthy weight………Clearly something isn’t right, but what is it?

Now flip the coin.  The table says you are obese.  You on the other hand, know you look and feel great.  In fact you are super fit.  You have muscles where other people can only dream of having muscles.  You know you are healthy.  You live a healthy lifestyle.  You are chizzled.  But the table says you are obese…..Something isn’t right is it?

How do you distinguish between two people who are both a ‘healthy weight’ on the BMI scale, but one is truly healthy and the other has high blood pressure, diabetes and can’t walk a few hundred meters without getting out of breath?  How do you distinguish between two people who are both ‘obese’ on the BMI scale, but one is a body of super strong muscles and the other is an unhealthy and truly overweight couch potato? How Much Should I Weigh?

The bottom line is – Don’t take all calculations at face value.

BMI is a calculation but does not take anything other than your weight and length into consideration.  BMI has it’s flaws.  The big difference between the two people ‘healthy’ or ‘obese’ on the BMI table is the percentage of fat in their bodies and more importantly their fat distribution.  People on the BMI table with a ‘healthy weight’, but with conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes can become complacent because the only thing they want to know about,  is their weight.  On the other hand, someone like a rugby player can be labeled as obese, yet they are fit and healthy.

I came across the following article, which provides information beyond just your BMI.  It takes different factors into consideration.  Click on this link – how much should I weigh – to read this article.

This article about BMI made me open my eyes to a lot of aspects we accept as fact or assume to be true.  I think I need to have a deeper look into this.  The one thing I have found to be of interest is belly fat and hip to waist ratio. HOw Much Should I Weigh

So once again, how much should I weigh, is an easy question, but with not such an easy answer.  You may be under weight on the BMI table, but actually be your perfect weight.   You might be a healthy weight on the BMI scale, but be completely unhealthy.  At the end of the day, you have to be clued up about what ‘healthy’ really means.
