Check your health by using our body mass index calculator on the right
Everybody knows that if we don’t take care of our body, we won’t have a place to live. And let’s face it: dying young is inconvenient! A body mass index calculator is a helpful tool to check your health and see how well you are taking care of your body.
However, a body mass index calculator (BMI calculator) is only a robust way to estimate your body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.
BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.
Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
Your Body Mass Index score means the following:
Underweight |
Below 18.5
|
Normal |
18.5 – 24.9
|
Overweight |
25.0 – 29.9
|
Obesity |
30.0 and Above
|
As stated, Body Mass Index (BMI) is a way to look at your body weight relative to your height. It is a scientifically-based index that categorizes you as being underweight, normal, overweight or obese, and also lets you know about your risk for developing obesity-associated diseases.

What the Results Mean
Based on your BMI calculation, you can determine your classification based on the chart below. Individuals with a BMI value of 25 and higher may be at increased risk for certain obesity-related conditions.
Using your BMI results as a starting point, you can create a personalized approach to healthier living through your Distributor’s trusted support and our science-based nutrition and weight-management products.
Below 20 = slender/lean (under weight)
20 to 25 = ideal weight range
25 to 30 = overweight (25-27 could be healthy range if large-boned and heavily muscled)
30 and above = very overweight / high risk
40 and above = extremely overweight / high risk for health complications
Another useful tool you can use in conjunction with the Body Mass Index Calculator, is a simple measuring tape!
Your waist size does matter
Every doctor knows that your circumference (waist size) reveals more than just a number.
Measuring waist circumference helps screen for possible health risks that come with overweight and obesity. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. This risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 35 inches for women or greater than 40 inches for men. To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hip bones. Measure your waist just after you breathe out.
Risk Factors to take into account
When you check your health, it is also prudent to take into account certain risk factors. These risk factors, in conjunction with your BMI score and your circumference, will give you a more complete picture of your level of health.
Every doctor knows that if your BMI indicate that you are overweight or obese, and you are affected by 2 or more of these risk factors, it is highly recommended that you lose weight. Even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity. People who are overweight, do not have a high waist measurement, and have fewer than two risk factors may need to prevent further weight gain rather than lose weight.
Risk Factors
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)
- Low HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol)
- High triglycerides
- High blood glucose (sugar)
- Family history of premature heart disease
- Physical inactivity
- Cigarette smoking
If your body mass index calculator readings indicate that you are within the normal weight range, it still does not mean that you have a “healthy weight”. That is determined by whether or not your body gets all the proteins, nutrients, vitamins and minerals that it needs on a daily basis.
If your body mass index calculator score indicates that you are over weight or obese, you need to find a way to lose weight urgently.
Everybody knows that even a small percentage of weight loss, can vastly improve your health and lower your risk of developing any of the above diseases.
If your body mass index calculator score indicates that you need to lose weight, or that you are under weight, you need to consider the following:
Unhealthy Diets
Most people have tried some or other diet in their lifetime. Everybody knows that diets don’t work. You get on a diet. You lose weight. You get off the diet. You gain weight. Everyone knows that yo-yo dieting does not produce permanent results and may even be harmful to your health.
Diets cut your daily calorie intake, forcing it to be lower than the amount of calories your body burns, and thereby forcing your body to lose weight. Everybody knows that the food today is not nearly as nutritious as the food of 50 years ago. We have to consume almost double the quantity of food to get the same amount of nutrition. That’s one of the reasons that obesity is so prevalent. We are forced to eat more and more, and in turn we get less and less nutrition. When you diet, you cut back on an already nutrient deficient food supply. You are literally starving your body cells to death, just to lose a little bit of weight!
All doctors know that your body has a certain amount of proteins that it needs every single day. Most people, just eating normally, do not get their required daily intake of proteins. If they then go on one of these diets, they usually cut their protein intake even more, leaving their bodies protein deficient.
Good Quality Protein
Your doctor will tell you that your muscles consist of proteins. Healthy muscles are important. The more muscle tissue you have, the higher your metabolic rate will be. In other words, the more muscle you have, the more fat your body will burn. If you do not eat your body’s required daily portion of protein, the muscles breaks down. When your muscle mass decrease, your metabolic rate slows down and everyone knows that when that happens, your body burns less and less fat.
Most people live on a diet filled with carbohydrates (short-term energy) and which is deficient in quality protein. It all starts with breakfast; the most important meal of the day. Everybody says that if you skip breakfast, you start the day on an empty tank. Starting out just on carbohydrates, is not much better. Your body needs proteins!
Everybody knows that proteins are the building blocks for your muscles. If you are not supplementing your protein intake daily, chances are that you are not getting enough. The most healthy proteins are soy proteins and proteins you get in through fish, organic chicken, nuts (almonds are really good) and to a lesser degree, red meat. Red meat is high in fat and too much red meat, will increase your cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, the body mass index calculator does not differentiate between fat mass and muscle mass.

Healthy Weight Loss
Healthy weight loss requires that you lower your calorie intake, whilst still providing your body with the quality proteins, vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs on a daily basis.
You deserve to be healthy, like everyone else. Doctors and dietitians say that to be healthy, you have to eat healthy and exercise.
Most people try to eat healthy and they try to exercise regularly, but let’s face it, it’s a struggle.
Everybody knows that our food today does not have the same nutritious value of the foods of 50 years ago, and most people simply do not have the time to go to the gym every day.
That’s why most people choose to supplement; and of those who supplement, the majority supplement with Herbalife.
Permanent Healthy Weight Loss
For most people, permanent weight loss remains a dream. For most of my life I watched my mother diet. She was by no means overweight, and on the Body Mass Index she would probably have been fine. She always wanted to lose 5-7 kg. Sometimes I think she just went on these crazy diets for my sake…to help me to lose weight. Yes, I too am familiar with the concept of yo-yo dieting through practical experience of my own!
This all changed when someone recommended that I try the Herbalife program. It was March 1996. I weighed 118kg at the time. So I tried the Herbalife products* and lost 36kg in just 6 months. Most people commented that I looked at least 10 years younger. But the best part for me, is the fact that I maintained this weight loss for over 17 years now. That’s what I call, Permanent Weight Loss, the healthy way. Herbalife is the perfect protein diet.
(Compulsory legal disclaimer: These results are not typical. Individual results will vary.)
[The Herbalife nutritional program provides your body with all the proteins, vitamins, minerals and nutrients in perfect balance that your body needs to function at an optimum level, and that in a very low-calorie form. You get the best quality soy protein supplement to help you build healthy muscle.]
* The products I used back then were the Formula 1 Shake, the Fibre & Herb tablets, Lipo-bond tablets, Vitamin Mineral Tablets, NRG and the Thermojetics tea.
My wife, who is a medical practitioner, also uses the products. She lost 10kg and maintains it ever since. She even used it before, during and after both her pregnancies. Our kids use the products. You could say we are a typical Herbalife family. The Herbalife products literally changed our lives.
There’s an old saying, “for things to change, you have to change.”

Hate counting calories?
Most people hate counting calories. Everybody knows that a “counting calories diet plan” is not sustainable for long term weight control. People who control their weight with Herbalife do not have to count their calories.
How many calories in an egg? Don’t care. All I have to know is that it’s a protein source. Everybody finds the Herbalife program so easy to use and most people love the taste of the shakes.
