I believe that we are all destined for greatness in our own unique way. To achieve that greatness however, we first need to discover our passion, our inner drive, our destiny…our calling. Most people do not become great; do not fulfill their potential and do not live up to their life’s expectation, simply because they have not found a way to discover the greatness within, and connected with it. Have you discovered your why?

I previously shared the recipe for success with you, but there was a crucial element missing…

The recipe for success is this (and I think you will agree that it makes a lot of sense):

Knowledge + Skills + Attitude = Success

Success being defined as “at the top of your game” in whatever profession or job you find yourself.

Knowledge, knowing WHAT to do.

Skills, knowing HOW to do it.

Attitude, knowing WHY and hence WANTING to do it.

You will also agree that if you have all the knowledge and all the skills, but you do not want to do it, you simply won’t and hence you will not experience success. Wanting to do it; knowing your WHY, is what will drive you to gain the knowledge and learn the required skills. But how do you find your why?

There is something missing from the above formula. Actually, it is the COMPLETE formula, but we are looking at it the wrong way. The majority of people start by acquiring knowledge in a particular field, then they learn the skills in that field, and then they set out to make their mark, with their eyes on the results, the success, usually money. Some days they feel like it and others they don’t. If the results, the success, the money, does not come fast enough, they simply say, “this is not for me, I quit.” Then they jump onto another endeavor, and go through the exact same process again, and again, and again…Some even say, “it’s not about doing what you love, it’s about loving what you do…try harder! For heavens sake, fake it till you make it if you have to!” That my friend, is bad advice.

The reason why the success formula fails for the majority of people, is because it is followed in the wrong order.

You have to start with the WHY. Knowing WHY you want to do something will make you WANT to do it. That is the driving force that will get you out of bed in the morning; that will get you across the hurdles along the way; that will steer you through the storms of you life.

How do you discover your WHY? Very simple. Ask yourself this question: What do I believe? Now write down all of your beliefs. Your calling; your destiny, your purpose is rooted firmly in your beliefs. Which of your beliefs excites you; get’s you madly passionate? Those are clues.

I recently watched and re-watched the following talk by Simon Sinek, explaining why success folloews when you move from Why, to How, to What, instead of the other way around. I cannot say it better or explain it better.
